Co-Facilitation in Climate Emotion Groups

Facilitating a Climate-Emotion Group requires holding space for the group's participants.

Because of the nature of climate change-related emotions, many group models recommend

that you work with a co-facilitator for each group you offer.

Why Co-Facilitation?

There are many advantages to co-facilitation:

  • Very helpful to help hold the emotions- model of interconnection

  • Preparation and debrief are essential

  • Helps manage entry and endings

  • Modeling of rupture and repair- you don’t have to be perfect, there is room for mistakes and unknowns

  • Can play different roles (time-keeper, giving introduction or instructions)

  • Self and co-reflection- during the group and after

  • Learning and increase in group facilitation skills as facilitators share feedback and grow in their work

What am I looking for in a Co-Facilitator?

Consider the factors that are important to you and the group you want to create.

  • Group type - Climate Cafe, Good Grief, Work that Reconnects, Process Group, etc.

  • Group length - ongoing, or limited to one meeting

  • In-person group?  Location is key

  • Virtual group? Tech connectivity and time zone

  • * Group Cost - is this a free group or will there be a fee involved?

  • * Identity / Representation - We honor the intersectional identities of our group facilitators and want to ensure that historically marginalized/oppressed communities are represented and welcomed among our facilitators

  • * Experience level of facilitators? Are you interested in having a mentor? Being a mentor?

Guidelines for Co-Facilitator Directory Use:

1. Members are invited to independently search for and reach out to other co-facilitators who have expressed willingness to collaborate.  Any collaboration is to be done independently of CPA-NA.

2. Never share another member's information with others without express permission from the member.

3. If you find a co-facilitator you'd like to work with, reach out through email or call.

4.  Once you've connected, share your vision for the facilitation work you'd like to do, and listen to the other member's vision.

5. If you discover you and the member have different facilitation goals, be clear with each other that, at this juncture, you both have different goals. Continue searching using the Co-Facilitator Directory.

6.  If you discover you and the other member have overlapping facilitation goals, you can begin to plan your Climate Emotion Support group.  Make sure to consider the legal and promotional needs for your group.

6.  We recommend you both attend the CPA-NA Facilitator's Support Group as you prepare together.

7.  Co-facilitator relationships are not "exclusive", and members can connect and develop groups with multiple co-facilitators as desired.
